Built in the 1700 beside a dam crossing the Black River, the area has served as a gristmill & sawmill, which became a hub for settlement. It has also been the site of a cotton gin, turpentine distillery, post office, gas station, and restaurant. Today it is a favorite spot for fishing, canoeing, photography, and sunsets. The remains of the old mills site and dam are intact. The lake encompasses more than 460 acres of tea-colored water filled with bright lilies, beavers and an enormous grove of cypress. Black River is the heart of Rhodes Pond, feeding it continually for both wildlife and a variety of fish native to the river. There has recently been a new boat ramp with a floating dock added. You can fish, picnic, canoe, hike and more. Open daily to the public - free of charge. The NC Wildlife Commission is in the process of building a fishing pier to enhance handicap accessibility.
