A Second Empire-style cottage built in 1883, the Propst House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Much of the furniture is original to the house and some was actually built by J. Summie Propst. The interior features examples of intricately carved woodwork. The tour focuses on the house, the history of the Summie and Jennie Propst and what life was like in Hickory in the late 1800s. Docents are scheduled to have the house open from 1:30 to 4:30 on Thursday and Sunday afternoons March through December. The house is closed in Jan. and Feb. Tours are also available by appointment (with a bit of notice) by calling 828-322-4731.
