Built in 1769, this landmark is Wake County’s oldest existing home. As the center of the old Wake Court House community, it became the “Birthplace of Raleigh” when its owner, Joel Lane, a prominent statesman and soldier, sold 1,000 acres of his plantation for the formation of the new state capital in 1792. Informative guided tours of the fully restored and authentically furnished house, period gardens and dependencies are provided by costumed docents. Tours begin in the Visitors Center at 160 S. Saint Mary’s St.

Admission is $8 for adults; $7 for 65 and older, $4 for students & free for children under 6.

Tours are offered Wed-Fri at 10:00 am, 11:00 am , noon, and 1:00 pm, and on Saturdays at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Reservations for groups larger than eight.
