This Victorian-Colonial Revival home contains period antique furnishings and art and is open for free tours. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Built by Jefferson Smith Davis around the turn of the century, his daughter Gertrude Smith moved back to the family home after his death. She was an interior decorator, educated in NYC in the 1920s. When she moved back to Mount Airy, she continued her work as a decorator and pouring her love & passion into the home. Upon her death in 1981, she willed the home to be left as though it was still occupied - a "living museum." A tour of the home gives visitors the feeling that the family is still living there with furnishings, accessories, and artwork displayed just as when they were. The yard contains trees and shrubs planted decades ago.
