The Community was named for the early 19th century free Negro preacher and teacher of the races, John Chavis(1763-1838). The 37-acre park owned by the City of Raleigh and was opened as a recreational spot for Raleigh’s black community during segregation. The original 1937 carousel still exists and the park was dedicated on May 10,1938.
