Pirates of the Carolinas
North Carolina's coast was home to scores of seafaring scoundrels in the 1700's, including Blackbeard, one of the most feared pirates of his era. Today, visitors can stage their own pirate invasion in festivals from Beaufort to Wilmington, gaze out over the spot where Blackbeard fought his last battle near Ocracoke, or even go diving on the presumed wreck of his flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.
Those wanting to stay dry while following Blackbeard's trail can find plenty of pirate items on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort.
