Hollerin' Contest - Spivey's Corner
There's a whole lotta hollerin' goin' on every June in Spivey's Corner, North Carolina. That's when this little crossroads is home to the National Hollerin' Contest, where contestants try to impress the judges with both their vocal 'stylings' and their knowledge of the different types of 'hollers'. People here consider hollerin' to be a folk art, a tribute to an era when rural residents had to communicate over long distances with nothing but their voices.

Tim, Thank you so much for this great piece on the hollerin contest. It was a pleasure working with you and Paul on that very "hot hollerin" day in June. Thanks for helping us preserve this ole timey tradition and the legacy of simpler times. It is our hope that others can come, learn and experience what 'hollerin is all about' in June 2010.
