Standing with quiet dignity and majesty across the river from downtown Wilmington, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA beckons you to walk her decks and envision daily life as well as the fierce combat that her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
At the time of her commissioning on in 1941, the battleship NORTH CAROLINA was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon. Her wartime complement consisted of 144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men, including about 100 Marines. During the war, NORTH CAROLINA participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars.
Now, the NORTH CAROLINA rests proudly on the Cape Fear River, a testament to the bravery of those who sailed on her and a memorial to all who fought and died for America’s freedom in World War II. Experience the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, and feel the history of that era come alive.
