Thanks to precious Knut and the lovely Flocke of Germany I have become an avid bear fan. I am an "official" across the miles auntie of Knut as well as the darling black bear cub "L'il Smokey" who was rescued by a firefighter during last year's California wildfires and lovingly rehabbed and released by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. Bears are being found to be at least as intelligent as the great apes and emotionally complex. I have seen PETA's video showing the cramped and depressing quarters the zoo's bears are confined to and would like to see their enclosures made more habitable and enlarged and enrichment toys and other amenities introduced into these magnificent yet endearingly charismatic creatures' lives. Thanks.
