Holden Beach
Named one of the best family beaches in the county by National Geographic Traveler magazine, Holden Beach offers plenty of opportunities to reconnect. From hours of playing together in the sun, sand and surf, to quite evenings sitting on the porch, listening to the ocean and not saying a word, you’ll find Holden Beach is the place where “each other” is more important than “what to do.”
Here you’re sure to find a laid-back vacation that will delight your whole family. A day on the beach is filled with watching for dolphins playing in the surf, combing the beach for whelks and other seashells and playfully chasing ghost grabs with flashlights during an evening stroll. A boat or kayak is the perfect way to cruise “downtown” Holden Beach, as almost all the island’s stores and restaurants line the Intracoastal Waterway. Tie up and have lunch “island-style” with a plate of freshly caught shrimp and an ice-cold beer. Explore the island on a bike and peddle to the far eastern tip of Holden to Lockwoods Folly inlet. At low tide, the inlet draws away to reveal dozens of tidal pools. Some may hold fish and other sea creatures that patiently wait for the next incoming tide, while empty ones are a great place to cool off and enjoy the salt water away from the surf. Families with small children often call this one of their favorite things to do.
