Bennett Place State Historic Site

Bennett Place is the State Historic Site where the Civil War ended in 1865 when Confederate General Johnston surrendered to Union General Sherman 17 days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Reconstructed farm house, outbuildings, interpretive center and museum.

One of the most significant Civil War sites I have ever visited where the war truly came to an end. Great visitor center and well kept historic grounds. The movie is well worth seeing.

April 17-18, 2010 Bennett Place State Historic Site, Durham, North Carolina. 145th Anniversary Surrender Commemoration. This special commemorative event marks the largest surrender of the American Civil War, which helped reunify the United States. Visit the reconstructed Bennett Farm on the exact location where the generals convened to sign the terms of surrender. "Meet" Major General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Joseph Eggleston Johnston along with other Civil War soldiers during this living history weekend. Sunday there will be the final stacking of arms ceremony with the farewell address given by General Johnston to his troops. A wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Unity Monument to honor soldiers of North and South. Mark Bradley author of This Astounding Close the Road to Bennett Place will sign books guest speakers. Additional living history programs, music by the Huckleberry Brothers and displays and exhibits on Civil War ancestry will be throughout the weekend. Event activities are ongoing Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday, 10am-3pm. Admission is FREE and donations graciously accepted. For More Information Contact: 919-383-4345.
