NC’s independence-minded residents were among the first to call for severed ties with Britain, and its position in the middle of the 13 colonies made it pivotal in the Revolutionary War. Here, you can find the site where NC first made its independence known (Halifax), the archeological remains of a city that was sacked by British in 1776 (Brunswick), and the scene of a decisive 1781 battle that led directly to the British surrender in at Yorktown (Guilford Courthouse).
