It only lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet, but on December 17, 1903 man’s first powered flight occurred on a wind-swept dune on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Orville and Wilbur Wright are honored with their own National Monument in Kill Devil Hills, where you can explore and discover how it all happened. NC is so proud of its place in aviation history, we’ve even got it on our license plates!
