It was the last of eleven southern states to secede, but North Carolina played a large role and paid a steep price in the Civil War. Across the state, there are many places that preserve and reenact that tragic history, and honor the brave men on both sides who fought in the War Between the States. In NC, you can find part of Sherman’s march, the coastal fort that saw the largest amphibious assault in history before D-Day, and the site of the largest Confederate surrender of the war.
