Coastal Plain Wine Trail – Piedmont

Three Wineries, Distance Of 65.4 Miles – Fans of the native and healthy muscadine grape will find a lot to like on this wine trail, which winds its way from Interstate 95 near Smithfield through Goldsboro and down to the I-40 corridor near the town of Warsaw.

You’ll start at the largest muscadine vineyard in North Carolina at the Hinnant Family Vineyards and Winery, where you can tour the facilities, taste the wine, or just sit on the large wrap-around porch and enjoy the day. Then you’ll head east to A Secret Garden Winery, which makes its wines without any chemicals and is in the process of becoming certified “organic”. From there, it’s south to The Country Squire Winery, which also boasts a popular restaurant and inn on the property.

Directions:

  1. From Interstate 95: Take Exit 101 (L and L Truck Stop Road) south for 0.6 miles. Take a right on Lizzie Mill Road and immediately bear left onto Pine Level-Micro Road. The Hinnant Family Vineyards and Winery will be 1.2 miles down the road.
  2. Return to I-95 by returning to Pine Level-Micro Road, then taking a slight right onto Lizzie Mill Road and an immediate left onto L and L Truck Stop Road. Head north on I-95 for 5.5 miles, then take exit 107 (US Highway 301) toward Kenly/Wilson. Take US 301 into Kenly for 0.4 miles and turn right at West 2nd Street/NC Highway 222. Continue on NC 222 for 13.8 miles into the town of Fremont, then turn right onto Old US Highway 117 (North Wilson Street). Follow Old US 117 for 4.2 miles, then turn left at Mount Carmel Church Road follow for 1.1 miles, then turn left onto Airport Road. A Secret Garden Winery will be immediately on your right.
  3. Return to Old US 117 and take a left. Go 6.1 miles into Goldsboro, then take the ramp onto US 117 South. Follow US 117 into the town of Warsaw, then take a left onto Dudley Street followed by an immediate right onto Memorial Drive. The Country Squire Restaurant, Inn and Winery will be 4.4 miles away on your left.
  4. To return to Interstate 40, take a left back onto NC 24/50, then turn left onto Johnson Church Road and follow to US 117 South. Take a left, and Interstate 40 will be immediately ahead. Take I-40 East to get to Wilmington, and I-40 West to head toward Raleigh and points west and north.

Winery hours vary seasonally. Please call ahead to be sure the vineyards you want to visit will be open when you arrive. Please drink responsibly. Designate a driver.
