Explore The Land Of Waterfalls
Let water that’s moved mountains shape you.
Nestled in the southwest corner of North Carolina just an hour from Asheville and two hours from Charlotte, Transylvania County offers a unique departure from everyday life. Known as the Land of Waterfalls, this destination is a perfect place to explore more than 250 waterfalls and the endless beauty of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
At 411 feet, Whitewater Falls is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States
One of the most amazing waterfalls any time of year is Rainbow Falls. Its constant mist in warm weather sends rainbows cascading toward the sun, giving the waterfall its name. Rainbow Falls, also known as High Falls, is on the Horsepasture River in Transylvania County.
The 411-foot Whitewater Falls, called the "King of Waterfalls," is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. No other waterfall east of the Rockies has its combination of water volume, height and visibility. Whitewater Falls has been designated a North Carolina Natural Heritage Area.
Looking Glass Falls is one of the country’s most viewed falls. It’s 35 feet wide and drops 65 feet. You can view it from the observation deck or you can walk to its base. You might recognize this waterfall from the movie "Last of the Mohicans," which was filmed in this and several other beautiful spots in North Carolina.
DuPont State Recreational Forest was put in the spotlight during the filming of "The Hunger Games" in the summer of 2011. Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the covered bridge at High Falls all served as backdrops for scenes from the film, and visitors can relive the movie and get a behind-the-scenes experience with this four-day itinerary.
Although not a waterfall, Sliding Rock is also in this area. This 60-foot natural water slide in the Pisgah National Forest is not to be missed. Wear your cut-off shorts to sit and slip down the rock into the pool below, where 60-degree water beats summer heat.
Other falls of note in the area include Turtleback Falls, a favorite swimming spot, Moore Cove Falls, which spills over a tremendous granite shelf, creating a falls you can walk behind, and Twin Falls, which features two falls.
Within Transylvania County lies the quaint mountain town of Brevard. Highlights include eclectic galleries, boutiques, bistros, an old-fashioned soda shop and a 1930s-era movie theater. It’s an ideal base camp for exploring the nearby waterfalls and other outdoor pursuits.
