NC Parks Unveil New Online Reservations System

If you’ve ever wanted to get away for a week or a weekend at one of NC’s 37 state parks, you now have a way to make sure there’ll be a campsite waiting for you. In April, North Carolina State Parks launched a new online reservations system that will make booking a campsite, vacation cabin, picnic shelter, community building or other facility as easy as clicking a mouse.

In the past, most NC Parks facilities were reserved on a first come/first served basis, either by mail or by visiting the park you planned to stay at in person. That meant that people leaving work on Friday for a weekend at a popular spot sometimes had trouble finding a campsite, especially during the peak times of the year. The online reservations system will change all that, enabling anyone to book a state park facility online, via a toll-free phone number, or by visiting any state park office or visitors center.

The new system allows you to reserve a campsite at most state parks for a visit of a single night, or as much as two weeks. You can book facilities eleven months in advance, or 48 hours before you show up. You can also choose your location. Need to be near the bathrooms? You can make that happen. Need a site with an RV hookup? You can do that, too. And, you can pay for your stay with a credit or debit card.

Currently, you can go to www.ncparks.gov, click on the ‘reservations’ link, and book facilities for state park visits on or after July 15. To avoid double-booking problems, visits prior to that will continue to be booked via the old paper-based reservations system. As of July 15, the old system will be phased out completely, and all reservations will be made through the new system.

There will still be a few sites made available for walk-up registration, and the 14-day maximum stay remains in effect. There is a $3 surcharge per night’s stay to support the online system. For more details on the new system, go to the NC Parks web site.
