Forest City’s Historic Main Street
Start the weekend strolling Forest City's historic Main Street, where locally owned shops, restaurants, public art and historic architecture introduce you to small-town character. It's particularly special during the holidays, when Forest City turns up the magic with more than 1 million Christmas lights illuminating Main Street during its beloved Hometown Holiday festivities. Make time to see the lights and decorated storefronts, stop to see Santa, enjoy a carriage ride or a quick skate on the ice rink, and sip on hot chocolate while you take it all in before heading to your stay for the night.
Carrier Houses Bed & Breakfast
Check into one of two beautifully preserved Victorian homes in the heart of historic Rutherfordton. Built in the 1800s, Carrier Houses offers eight individually appointed guest rooms and puts you within walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants and historic sites. Enjoy a gourmet homemade breakfast made by owners Jim and Russell while they share stories and make local recommendations.
The Hatchling Coffee House
Start the morning at The Hatchling Coffee House at Grey Hawk for coffee, tea, pastries and breakfast before exploring Lake Lure. Then remember this spot for later: Next door, Grey Hawk Bar & Gardens combines food and drinks with beautiful outdoor spaces and live entertainment, with cocktails incorporating herbs from the garden.
Lake Lure Flowering Bridge
Slow down among the whimsical, themed gardens along the banks of the Rocky Broad River at Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. The beloved community garden attraction is free to visit and showcases the creativity, volunteer spirit and natural beauty that have made it one of Lake Lure's most distinctive places to wander.
Chimney Rock Village
Spend an afternoon in Chimney Rock Village, a mountain town in Hickory Nut Gorge beneath its namesake rock. Browse independent shops and locally made souvenirs, a visit that means even more as the village keeps rebuilding after Hurricane Helene. Then walk the Riverwalk behind Riverwatch Grill and Bubba O'Leary's General Store to see a new public art installation — created with UNC Charlotte architecture students — tracing the gorge's history, the storm and the village's future.
Chimney Rock Smokehouse
End the day with smoked meats, comfort food, craft cocktails and lively local atmosphere in the heart of Chimney Rock Village at Chimney Rock Smokehouse. Holiday bonus: If your getaway falls during the holiday season, the Smokehouse transforms into Miracle on Main Street, bringing festive décor, seasonal cocktails and an extra dose of Christmas cheer to the village.
Downtown Rutherfordton
Founded in 1787, Rutherfordton is one of Western North Carolina’s oldest towns, where historic architecture and tree-lined streets meet locally owned shops, restaurants and plenty of small-town charm. Take your time strolling downtown, browsing for locally inspired gifts, admiring architecture that hints at centuries of stories and popping into local favorites along the way. Pro Tip: Don’t rush this stop. Rutherfordton is best enjoyed at a slower pace.
B Sharp Music
Make an only-in-a-small-town stop at this independent music shop, where musicians and music lovers can browse instruments, gear and more while getting a taste of the community's longstanding connection to music. Spindale is known as the home of WNCW-FM, the most-listened-to public radio station in Western North Carolina.
The Hoot Nannie
Before heading home, stroll Forest City's Main Street one last time and settle in at The Hoot Nannie. This spot brings together the farmer and the pitmaster, serving whole-hog barbecue, fresh burgers and Southern comfort food made with local farm-raised meats. Browse any shops you missed Friday, then hit the road well-fed. Pro Tip: Come hungry. The hand-breaded cheese curds are a must.
