Bald Head Island Ferry
Getting to, and around, Bald Head Island is its own adventure. Cars are prohibited, so leave yours in Southport and board the ferry, which leaves at the top of every hour. Before you do, arrange for the island tram to shuttle your luggage to your rental home and reserve a golf cart — that's your new method of transportation.
Boat House BHI
Located conveniently near the ferry landing, grab a hearty breakfast or lunch at this spot that sports a full bar and a classic nautical aesthetic. After your meal, stop by Sandpiper Coffee & Ice Cream next door for a to-go treat.
Old Baldy
Definitely make time to visit Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse. Climbing the 108 steps to the stops rewards you with 360-degree views of the island, river and ocean.
Midway Coffee
Start your day at Midway Coffee. Try their coffees, acai bowls, ice cream, and a toast menu with such items as egg and avocado or cucumber and salmon. It’s the perfect spot for a quick breakfast or pick-me-up.
Bald Head Island Marina
The warm water also makes for fantastic fishing. Large schools of drum, flounder and trout can be found, especially in and around Bald Head Creek. They bite best close to low tide, when currents position them in predictable places. The Bald Head Island Marina dockmaster can let you in on local fishing tips, secure a slip for your boat or recommend a local fishing guide. Just make sure you purchase a fishing license before casting your line.
JULES’ Salty Grub & Island Pub
After a long day of fishing, head to dinner at one of the many options on the island. Two popular harbor-side restaurants are JULES' Salty Grub & Island Pub and Delphina Coastal Cuisine, where Mexican seafood dishes are always a good choice.
Nye’s Cream Sandwiches
For your nightcap, grab a dessert or drink at Nye’s Cream Sandwiches. Pop over to this walk-up window located in the Forest Pavilion near the Maritime Market. You’ll find ice scoops, milk shakes and the legendary Nye’s Cream sandwiches.
Kent Mitchell Nature Trail
Nature preserves cover about 80 percent of Bald Head Island, making wildlife-watching as simple as stepping outside. The half-mile Kent Mitchell Nature Trail offers plenty of views and a leisurely stroll.
Bald Head Island Conservancy
You and your guests won’t be the only special visitors flocking to Bald Head Island this fall. While shorebirds, such as American oystercatchers and sanderlings, wade here year-round, migratory birds will begin arriving. For the best views, join Bald Head Island Conservancy’s birding walk on various weekday mornings. On the conservancy’s campus, you’ll also find Mike's Bites, a counter-service venue serving hot dogs, sandwiches, Italian ice and other snacks.
Turtle Central
The island’s car-free lanes and flat ground make for almost effortless pedaling between restaurants, sights and unique shops such as Turtle Central. Named for the island being the largest East Coast nesting site for endangered loggerhead sea turtles, it sells environmentally oriented goods.
Coastal Urge
Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards allow you to explore the island’s winding creeks and expansive estuaries. A kayak is best for first-timers because it’s maneuverable and stable. Rent any of the three from Coastal Urge or East Beach Surf Shop, and check out Riverside Adventure Co. for bike rentals.
Island Retreat Spa
Though its fall hours are limited, there’s still plenty of time to unwind at Island Retreat Spa. The spa draws inspiration for its treatments from the surrounding waves and maritime forest, which is filled with draping live oaks. Services are available for the entire family. Peaceful music and a steaming cup of exotic tea set the stage when you arrive. Its massages are popular; the Signature, for example, can be customized with aromatherapy or heated stones.
