Pamlico Scenic Byway
For experienced cyclists, the full 127-mile Pamlico Scenic Byway offers an epic journey through waterfront towns and wildlife refuges. Start in Washington and follow the route through historic Bath, picturesque Belhaven and the Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge before ending at Manns Harbor.
Historic Bath
If you prefer a shorter ride, begin in Bath, NC’s oldest incorporated town. A 15-mile ride northeast toward Belhaven takes you past beautiful waterfront scenery and through a town once home to the infamous pirate Blackbeard.
Lake Mattamuskeet
Starting in Swan Quarter, head east toward Lake Mattamuskeet, NC’s largest freshwater lake. Ride past towering cypress trees and take in the dramatic beauty of this 40,000-acre natural wonder.
Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Follow Highway 12 from Nags Head to Ocracoke and down to the Crystal Coast. This 138-mile route winds through charming island towns like Rodanthe and Hatteras, with ferry rides connecting the journey along the way.
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
A ride through Pea Island offers a rare look at an undeveloped barrier island. As you cycle, listen to the crashing waves and keep an eye out for some of the 350 species of birds that call this refuge home.
Island Greenway
For a relaxed coastal ride, the Island Greenway in Carolina Beach provides a 1.2-mile paved path exclusively for bikers and pedestrians. Start at Mike Chappell Park and ride south to Alabama Avenue, where you can take a break at the beach.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Just 5 miles south of the Island Greenway, the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and North Carolina Aquarium at Kure Beach offer a perfect mid-ride stop. Meet Luna, the albino alligator, or get up close with sea turtles and sharks at the aquarium.
Ferry to Southport
For an extra adventure, take the bike-friendly Fort Fisher ferry to Southport. Explore the town’s historic sites, waterfront restaurants and antique shops before heading back.
