Bald Head Island Ferry
The ferry will be both your first and last stop on this adventure, as the island has its own transportation system. Cars are prohibited, so leave it behind and embrace the true definition of “getaway.” Pro tip: Before you board, reserve seats on the island tram that’ll take you and your belongings from the ferry to your vacation rental. The ferry, tram, island and many rentals are dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your pet, too. Some rentals even include a golf cart, which is the ideal means of getting around the island. If not, rent one (or a bicycle) for your entire stay or a quick sightseeing tour.
Old Baldy
Your first glimpse of the island will likely show off this treasured landmark. Climbing all 108 steps of Old Baldy — the oldest standing lighthouse in NC — rewards you with a 360-degree view of the state’s southernmost barrier island and its stunning landscape. Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, this lighthouse was built in 1817 and was a recognizable location in the cult classic “Weekend at Bernie’s.” Hear more of the iconic lighthouse’s story at the Smith Island Museum and on the history tour, which includes Fort Holmes (used by the Confederates to keep Civil War supply lines open) and British Fort George (site of a Revolutionary War amphibious attack, the first in US military history).
Maritime Market
You’ll find fresh ingredients — from local produce to seafood — at the Maritime Market, which also offers grocery delivery. Arrive early for coffee or breakfast at Maritime Market Café because it gets crowded fast during peak season. Choose from daily specials, the popular breakfast sandwiches or some grits. Afterward, browse local artists’ work at All About Art or find island-inspired fashions from Bald Head Blues.
Bald Head Island Club
Between the beach and the lighthouse is Bald Head Island Club. Grab a guest membership and take advantage of amenities such as tennis courts, a croquet course, a pool and a golf course. Some vacation rentals include membership to the Club — just check with your rental company or homeowner beforehand.
Kent Mitchell Nature Trail
The Kent Mitchell Nature Trail offers a scenic, accessible escape for all ages and abilities. The main path is an easy, level stroll that takes less than 30 minutes, winding through a serene forest and across wooden boardwalks with stunning views of protected salt marshes — perfect for kayaking. Want to extend your adventure? Explore the secondary trails for a longer, more immersive hike.
Coastal Urge
To experience the island from a completely different perspective, rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak from Coastal Urge. Enjoy living life at a more relaxed pace from the water — it’s what the locals proudly call “turtle time.” Explore the marshes or cruise the coastline, just be sure to remain conscious of the beautiful ecosystem around you. Back at Coastal Urge, you’ll also find fun souvenirs and high-quality beach gear to help outfit your stay.
South Beach
Start exploring Bald Head Island’s 14 miles of beaches at Cape Fear Point, where notorious navigation hazard Frying Pan Shoals extends offshore for 30 miles. Multiple Beach Access points sit along South Beach, but #35 puts you close to the shoals. Beachcombing is best on South Beach, which runs east and west. It's also the site of a special wintertime spectacle: You can watch the sun rise, glide low across the southern sky and set from the same spot. Fishing and crabbing are also popular beach activities, but be sure to help take care of the coast while enjoying these natural environments.
The Shoals Club
More shoals you’ll want on your radar is The Shoals Club, where there’s fun for the whole family, including the clubhouse, pool and boardwalk extending to South Beach. The club also hosts special events such as scavenger hunts and outdoor movie nights.
Bald Head Island Ferry Landing
The ferry landing and marina are located on the western side of the island, with West Beach access points within walking distance. Head here at least once during your visit to watch boats from the patio at JULES' Salty Grub & Island Pub, whose varied menu includes the popular toasted coconut shrimp. Schedule the tram to return you and your belongings to this landing when it’s time for your Bald Head Island trip to end. If you’re leaving anytime between Memorial Day and Labor Day, sit on the ferry’s upper deck and savor the ocean and island views one more time.
