Grimshawes Post Office
3798 Whiteside Cove Road, Highlands, NC 28717
Tucked away in the picturesque landscape near Cashiers, Grimshawes Post Office is a charming relic of early 20th century Americana. Measuring a mere 5 by 6 feet, this diminutive structure served as a functional post office from 1878 until 1953, proudly holding the title of the smallest post office in the United States during its years of operation. Originally named the Whiteside Cove Post Office, it was renamed Grimshawes in 1909 after its first postmaster, Thomas Grimshawe, who owned a grist mill and a large parcel of land in the area. After its closure, the tiny building was repurposed as a ticket booth atop Whiteside Mountain before being lovingly restored by local residents. Today, it stands just off Whiteside Cove Road, offering visitors a glimpse into the quaint postal history of the region.
