Fort Nooherooka Monument
205 Fort Run Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580
The Fort Neyuherú:kę (English spelling: Nooherooka) Monument, located near Snow Hill in Greene County, commemorates a pivotal and painful chapter in North Carolina’s early colonial history: the final battle of the Tuscarora War in 1713. At this site, a fortified Tuscarora stronghold was overtaken by colonial and allied forces, resulting in the deaths or capture of hundreds of Tuscarora people and the eventual migration of survivors northward, where they joined the Iroquois Confederacy.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, the Fort Nooherooka Site holds deep cultural and historical meaning. During the 300th commemoration, a rare handmade wampum belt — crafted from quahog shells and deer sinew with symbols of homeland and journey — was gifted to nearby East Carolina University. The university pledged to preserve and share this sacred object with students, scholars and visitors alike.
