Sept. 29, 2013, Burst of yellow leaves spotted on a maple tree near Woods Walk picnic area.

Fall color remains spotty around Grandfather Mountain, but it should really start to develop over the next couple of weeks. Currently, many shrubs above 5,000 feet are turning, and the most colorful trees on the mountain are maples of the red, sugar, striped and mountain varieties.
