Skip SicklerOct. 9 Report - Grandfather Mountain

Oct. 9, 2013, Maples lining the picket fence at the intersection of NC Highway 181 and US Highway 221 in Pineola.

These beautiful maples lining the picket fence at the intersection of NC Highway 181 and US Highway 221 in Pineola set the scene for beautiful photographs each fall. This photo is a great illustration of the current color between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation, which includes the towns of Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk. There are bright autumn colors and many leaves that still have yet to turn.

This week and weekend will be a great time to enjoy fall color in the High Country. Autumn hues are reaching peak above 4,000 feet. Maples, sourwoods, ash, yellow birch, witch hazel and oaks are all beautiful at Grandfather Mountain right now.
