Oct. 23, 2013, River Trail looking downstream along the Jacob Fork.

Color has come to the South Mountains. The sourwoods and black gums are showing us shades of red, finally! There’s plenty of yellow and green, too. Many of our trees will keep their green leaves until the first hard frost. We expect to reach peak color at the end of October.

South Mountains State Park will offer ranger-led leaf hikes Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 2-3. Join a ranger for a short hike along our Hemlock Nature Trail to enjoy the peak season of fall foliage in the South Mountains. Meet a ranger at the Jacob Fork parking lot at 11 am or 2 pm on Saturdays, or 2 pm on Sundays. Call the visitor center for more information at (828) 433-4772.
