Scotland County holds one of the largest concentrations of Highland Scots in North America, and for one October weekend it sounds like it with pipe bands, harp and Gaelic song from downtown Laurinburg to the John Blue House property.
Friday's free Highland Fling, an opening-night street party, fills McDuffie Square at 5:30 p.m. with food trucks, beer and music from Colin Grant-Adams, Glencoe and SYR.
Saturday's games open at 8:30 a.m. with heavy athletics: the caber toss and the sheaf toss, a 20-pound straw bale launched with a pitchfork. Solo piping, drumming and Highland dance competitions begin at 9 a.m., followed by a sheepdog demonstration at 10 a.m., kids games at 1 p.m. and the pipe band competition at 2 p.m. Harpist Ann Richards and a Gaelic workshop with Sheena Anderson round out a day ending at 5 p.m.
Sunday closes with the 10:30 a.m. Kirkin' of the Tartans, a Scottish American church tradition where clan tartans are brought forward to be blessed, at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church.
