Celebrate the music, stories and traditions of Southern Appalachia during Mountain Heritage Days, Western Carolina University’s weeklong festival in Cullowhee. From September 21-26, explore faculty-led programs, hands-on craft demonstrations and live performances across campus, then head to Bridge Park in Sylva for Friday evening’s Pickin’ in the Park concert.

Programming begins with an opening reception Monday, followed by educational activities and craft demonstrations throughout the week. The Rooted in the Mountains Symposium takes place Thursday and Friday, Pickin’ in the Park begins at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday’s festival programming begins at 10 a.m.

Saturday brings the festival’s largest lineup, with Appalachian music and dance, participatory shape-note singing, Wolfetown stickball demonstrations, a chainsaw competition, regional food vendors and artisan crafts. Watch heritage skills in action and connect with the people and practices that continue to shape Western North Carolina.
