Point of Interest
CSS Neuse II
118 N. Herritage St., Kinston, NC 28501
The CSS Neuse II is the only full-scale replica of a Civil War Confederate Ironclad in the world. Built as a community project, Saturday visitors can step aboard the CSS Neuse II and experience the life of a Civil War sailor. Two blocks away, the CSS Neuse Civil War Museum displays the remains of the original CSS Neuse ironclad gunboat, a product of the Confederate navy's ill-fated attempt to regain control of the lower Neuse River and retake the city of New Bern during the Civil War.
The museum offers visitors valuable insight into Kinston's location, the ship's historical significance, sailor life, and the ship's recovery. Visitors can delve into the history of Burnside's Expedition, Battles in Kinston during the war, and the end of the Civil War in North Carolina.
