Bunker Hill Covered Bridge

Covered bridges have aided and fascinated travelers since the founding of the United States, and visitors searching for unique bridges will find a one-of-its-kind bridge in North Carolina. Designated as a National Civil Engineering Landmark in 2001, the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is the only remaining wooden example of the Improved Lattice Truss patented by Civil War engineer General Herman Haupt. The bridge was built in 1895, covered with a 90-foot wooden roof in 1900, and protected with tin shingles in 1921. The Catawba County Historical Association restored it in 1994.
One of only two remaining covered bridges in North Carolina, the historic Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is located in Claremont, near Hickory. The state's other covered bridge is the Pisgah Covered Bridge near Asheboro. The Pisgah Covered Bridge was built in 1911 and crosses the West Fork Branch of the Little River within Uwharrie National Forest. The Pisgah Bridge is a great spot for photography, picnics and nature walks along the surrounding quarter-mile walking trail.
