Golf on the Currituck Outer Banks
The Sanderling Spa: A Serene Outer Banks Retreat
In contrast with the skittish activity of its namesake waterfowl, the Sanderling Spa provides a perfectly serene place to enjoy sublime amenities, views, treatments, and even cuisine. Whether or not one stays at the adjacent (and highly-recommended) Sanderling Resort & Spa, this is truly an Outer Banks retreat worth the journey.
It all starts with the setting. The Sanderling Spa sits on the banks of peaceful Currituck Sound, where views and sunsets are almost as soothing as the spa’s services (many treatment rooms overlook the Sound). It’s hard to feel stressed with that view – and that’s even before any scheduled appointments.
Spa treatment options are quite varied and designed to suit any timeframe or need, with shorter stand-alone choices complemented by “packages” of services. Utilizing both American and European techniques, many massage, body, skin, and nail care treatments use sea mud and minerals of local provenance that were created specifically for the Sanderling Spa.
The many massage possibilities can include hot stone, reflexology, and even one for the mother-to-be. Body treatments range from various wraps and scrubs to the “Healing Waters” of several different spa showers. There’s also the “Sea of Life,” which features a facial using sea shells and the therapeutic sounds of the ocean, as well as numerous soothing treatments specifically for the hair, hands, and feet.
Packages are quite popular for good reason. Many value-packed combinations are available, along with a custom-designed series of treatments following a consultation with trained staff.
The 80-minute “Serenity Ritual” is the ultimate in relaxation, where two therapists work in tandem in the Spa’s hydrotherapy room. It includes a hydro tub massage, a facial massage and mask, scalp treatment, sea salt glow, sea mud wrap, Scotch hose massage, and Vichy rain shower. For couples, the “Soul Mate Sanctuary” is performed in the exclusive Couples Suite, with an aromatherapy soak for two, an 80-minute couples massage with a view of Currituck Sound, and a gourmet spa lunch with champagne that’s served in the Spa’s Solarium.
The Spa’s creative cuisine was designed to nurture the body, with tasty and healthy fare. It certainly enhances the menu of offerings at the Sanderling Spa. Of course, the offerings at the famed Left Bank next door, as well as the more casual Lifesaving Station, feature more decadent dining options.
Insider tips: Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before appointment times to complete any paperwork and to enjoy the Spa’s facilities (Jacuzzi, steam, and an indoor pool all serve to relax the muscles before soothing treatments). Ask for one of the treatment rooms with a view of Currituck Sound. The Sanderling Resort & Spa offers “Spa Get Away” packages that include: luxurious accommodations; breakfast basket; choice of 50-minute manicure or pedicure; and choice of 50-minute massage, body, or skin treatment.
When to go: The Sanderling Spa is open 8:00 to 8:00 Monday to Saturday and 9:00 to 6:00 on Sundays. Off-season hours may vary. Call 800-701-4111 or view the spa menu online at www.thesanderling.com .
How to get there: Once on the Outer Banks proper, head north on NC 12. The Spa is on the left, about six miles north of “downtown” Duck.
