Western North Carolina is home to a variety of snow sports ranging from family-friendly to ultimate adventure. Nearly all of our ski resorts and winter areas are equipped with snowmaking equipment, and most are open from late November through mid-March. Whether you prefer to hit the slopes, soar through the trees, or curl up next to the fireplace, there's a winter adventure waiting for you here.
Appalachian Ski Mountain

Appalachian Ski Mountain dates back to 1962. The resort features 12 slopes, including three terrain parks, an ice arena, ski shop, gift shop, nursery and free Wi-Fi in its restaurant. Additional offerings include night skiing; ski, snowboard, skiboard, ice skate, helmet and clothing rentals; and group and private lessons.
Beech Mountain Resort
Beech Mountain
At 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain Resort is the highest ski and snowboard destination in eastern North America. In addition to day and night skiing and snowboarding, it offers two terrain parks, a 7,000-foot outdoor skating rink, gear rentals, private and group lessons, food, lodging, shopping and a nursery. The resort also features an adaptive learning center where volunteers teach children and adults with disabilities how to ski and snowboard.
Beech Mountain Sledding Hill

This free sledding hill is located next to the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce and Town Hall and features its own snowmaking machines. Open to children 12 and under. Plastic sleds and parental supervision required.
Cataloochee Ski Area
Maggie Valley
Founded in 1961, Cataloochee Ski Area is North Carolina’s oldest ski and snowboard resort. It features 16 runs and night skiing and snowboarding as well as equipment and clothing rentals, group and private lessons, lodging, and a ski shop. The resort also operates Tube World snow tubing park, located four miles away in Maggie Valley.
Hawksnest Resort
Seven Devils
Hawksnest Resort is a family-friendly winter area that’s home to the largest snow tubing park on the East Coast as well as the longest zip-line tour in the nation. The tubing park is comprised of four areas and more than 20 lit lanes ranging from 400 to 1,000 feet in length. The zip-line course features 19 cables covering four miles and is open year-round.

Take your tube to the top of the hill and hold on for an exhilarating ride down one of the six lanes at Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park. After tubing, warm up inside by the fireplace or watch from an observation deck. The park also offers night tubing.
Sapphire Valley Ski Area & Frozen Falls Tube Park

The Sapphire Valley Ski Area & Frozen Falls Tube Park is part of a 5,700-acre, four-season resort located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Known as a learning- and group-friendly resort, Sapphire offers a 1,600-foot skiing and snowboarding run as well as a 500-foot snow tubing run. The facility also features a rustic mountain lodge, restaurant, lodging and a ski shop with equipment and clothing rentals.

Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center offers winter fun for the entire family, featuring snow tubing and ice skating as well as an onsite restaurant. The center is located 112 miles north of Atlanta between Sky Valley, Ga., and Highlands, N.C.

Sugar Mountain features 20 slopes, 15 of which are lit for night skiing and riding. The resort also features the NASTAR public racing program, a terrain park, snowshoeing, snow tubing and ice skating at a 10,000-foot outdoor ice rink. In addition, Sugar Mountain offers equipment rentals, private and group lessons, food, lodging, shopping and daycare.
Wolf Ridge Ski Resort

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is located just five miles off I-26 and boasts a variety of offerings for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. The resort features 23 slopes and trails, snow sports school, two lodges and cabin and equipment rentals. Wolf Ridge also offers two snow tube runs located nearby on Puncheon Fork Road.
