Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
520 US-64 #264, Manteo, NC 27954
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, situated on the Albemarle Peninsula in Eastern NC, is a haven for wildlife and one of the last strongholds of endangered red wolves. Established in 1984 to preserve rare pocosin wetlands — peat-rich ecosystems with unique, shrubby vegetation — the refuge also boasts swamp forests, marshes and an incredible diversity of wildlife. Black bears, river otters and wintering waterfowl thrive in this 152,000-acre sanctuary.
Visitors can explore the refuge’s natural beauty in countless ways. Stroll along its two peaceful, accessible wildlife trails, or paddle through 15-plus miles of scenic, color-coded paddling trails. Wildlife enthusiasts flock to the popular Murphy Peterson Wildlife Drive to spot black bears, especially active in the early morning or evening. For a deeper dive, check the refuge’s calendar and join a guided tram tour or interpretive program.
